Working with my new Sony A73

Layla Gunter

Wow, wow, wow... The Sony A73 has blown my mind! If you are looking for a mirrorless camera which is exceptional for both photography and videography, then I seriously cannot recommend this camera enough...

So let me give you a little bit of back history, before you think I am being commissioned by Sony to write this. I am old school. It's a fact, a sad one, but true. I began photography with a Nikon D70 DSLR (now worth about £30!) and once I began making some money I switched to Canon and didn't look back. I currently own a Canon 5d Mk4 - WHICH I LOVE... however, it is heavy and it doesn't shoot flat for video (shooting flat allows you to colour grade better in the edit as it doesn't compress and add settings). So after a lot of contemplation and research I invested in a Sony A7s Mk2 for videography. Instantly I could use my Zhiyun Crane 2 gimbal a lot more efficiently as it was lighter and with certain lenses I had autofocus which was great.

However, despite everyone's positive reviews about this little cameras capabilities I just couldn't get it to autofocus with my Samyang lens (even though I was advised it would) and it just wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be... So I went back to the very chatty and helpful chaps in London Camera Exchange and they suggested part-exing for the Sony A73. It was a risk and I had a wedding that weekend at Elmore Court, which made it an even bigger risk... but I did it and I am so glad I did.

The auto-focus instantly worked with all of the lenses and the focus is sooooo fast! I mean really fast! I can now literally roam around on a super soft f/stop, capturing beautiful shots pretty much instantly. The low light capability is exceptional, it's light and it is easy to colour grade. I still need to experiment more with the photography side of things, but I actually worked alongside a photographer at the Elmore Court wedding - Tom Dunn and he introduced me to some of the photography features such as automatic eye detection and it was insane.

So if you're thinking of making a change, I'd highly recommend this baby.
